Building the Rideau Canal: A Pictorial History by Robert Passfield. A 2003 reprint of the 1982 classic. The book features 72 period illustrations of the canal during and just following construction, 43 of which are in stunning colour. Passfield provides expert interpretation of these images and engaging descriptions of the engineering of the works. This is one of the best books about the Rideau. 184p. 1982. (reprinted in 2003). David W. Nichols and the Decoys of the Rideau Canal Waterway by Larry Lunnman. Stories of the craftsmen whose artistic abilities allowed them to turn out both working and decorative decoys with a particular focus on the Nichols family of Smiths Falls. Other noted carvers include John B. Garton of Smiths Falls, the Hutchings family of California ( near Jones Falls), George Curry of Chaffey's Lock, Frank Lyons and Bill Flynn of Newboro. The First Tay Canal in the Rideau Corridor, 1830-1850. Book on CD - new for 2009. This detailed 1984 report looks at the building and use of the First Tay Canal, built and operated by the Tay Navigation Company. Locks on the Tay River connected Perth to the Rideau Canal by way of Port Elmsley. The canal opened in 1834 but had a bit of a tortured life before closing in the 1860s.
